A bit about vinyl, copying and making a project harder than it should!

Months, or maybe even a year ago, I saw some of that vinyl lettering I LOVED. Loved so much, I had to have it! The funny part was when I bought it, I was asked, “Can’t you just paint that?” I’m sure I could, uh . .  but that would be copying! Here is the thing, the majority of the high {for me} comes from the actual thought when creating something original. And since this wasn’t my idea, I sure didn’t want to paint it!

Summed that up for ya’ – I still need to vlog about copying. And I will do . . . eventually!

Back to my vinyl story . . . My boys have this nook thing behind the door when you walk into their room. I’ve blogged about this space often. When we first moved in, it housed the gi-nomous fish tank. But, we grew tired of taking care of that monstrosity, and decided to put a better use to the space.

{current state of the corner – as of last night.}

Nothing fancy, just a good use of the space. I have more artwork that needs to be framed . . . I just haven’t worked that into my day yet. I have referred to this as the “Reading Corner” since its creation. So when I saw the vinyl lettering, it was a must!

But who said this crap was easy??? Oh.my.word! I’m pretty sure we made this much harder than it was suppose to be. It was easy to find the center from left to right on the glass, but then the center from top to bottom, with 2 different layers was a whole ‘nother story!!! I still have an “alphagator” to do and I’m skeerd!!! Does anyone want to come over and help me or maybe do it for me?! My husband and I started out laughing at how hard we were making it and then it turned to anger real quickly. We are just now talking to each other again.

Don’t get me wrong, the finished piece is awesome and completely perfect. I do wish it would have fit over the shelves or even suspended from the ceiling – but it didn’t or wouldn’t work either of those ways, so really I don’t know why I brought it up – it is perfect for what it is!

I know you can’t tell, but the “Reading” is in a fun spring-like green and the “corner” is in a sparkly blue – that’s right “sparkly blue!” It is so hard to tell in these pictures. Let’s get a closer view . . . .

Or maybe a closer view of that sparkly blue . . . .

{I love my camera and this lens. I just wanted to let you all know. What’s that? Yes, you should be jealous.}

My favorite part of this is the sparkly blue. It reminds me of a motorcycle helmet I had when I was a small babe. It was this exact color and sparkly and I swear it looked just like this. I also had a red one and a silver one and I vaguely remember a gold one. Because you know, every 4 or 5 year old needs choices when trying to match her motorcycle helmet to her attire for the day. And the fact that I could even change out my safety head gear during the day if I felt the need was an awesome feeling. And we also referred to the bike as a “motorbike” and not a “motorcycle” because we were just that cool. And from Tennessee. Again, another reason to be jealous of me.

Now, if I can only be that cool for my kids.

About Kim
I picked up a paint brush for the first time 7 years ago, and haven't put it down since. My goal - To paint a canvas for my son's nursery. I never dreamed a business would be born out of it. {And if you saw the first canvas, you would think the same thing, too!}

    ok – i am sure you said this before – but where are the red book shelves from?? Thanks :)

    • kim! says:

      I got the shelves from Pottery Barn Kids and originally they were white. They had red ones but they were out of stock when I went to order them. So, I just spray painted them red. I also have a blue one that has 2 bars {for taller books} that came from Land of Nod. It hangs in between 2 beds.

    That looks so familiar… I sell Uppercase Living.
    When you do the next one, put on the part 1 first. When you go to put on part two, cut out the triangles out of the paper and line up your now triangle “holes” on top of the triangles from the part 1 expression. It should go on perfectly. Does that make sense?
    If you are doing it on glass again, a light spritz of water on the glass will give you some “wiggle room” with your vinyl. Then rub over the paper once it is in place to get the water out, let dry overnight, rub again the next day, and peel off the transfer tape.
    If this doesn’t make sense, feel free to email me. :)

      Yes! That does make sense!!!! And I did get it from Uppercase Living!! I still have the Alphagator to do – so I will go with your instructions. I will do it on glass too – I don’t care for it on the walls. AND there is a huge chance I’ll paint the walls!!!!

      Thanks a bunch for the tips!

    So cute. I love this space. And….exactly what kind of lens do you use?? I think I might need one!!

    • kim! says:

      I have no idea!! haha! One of my best friends is a photographer and when I was about to make the jump and buy a good camera, she told me exactly what to get when I told her what results I wanted! The lens basically makes the fuzzy background all the time! I NEVER. TAKE. IT. OFF. MY. CAMERA! I know it had something to do with 5.8 haha! Let me ask, and I’ll get back to you!

    well, that is stinkin cute.. and the frog too…. ahhh!!

    • kim! says:

      You know, I didn’t notice the frog till a friend pointed it out!! I’m sure you won’t believe this, but it was a Hobby Lobby find! hahah! A long time ago – when I was pregnant with Hudson and he had a few frogs in his room.

    This is about the cutest little thing I have ever seen…and what a great way to make reading fun for kiddos! Ever since I started working on this Master’s degree, I’m constantly snapping pictures of random stuff that I think I can use in my classroom one day (and referring my classmates and anyone else who will listen to my incessant rambling about my new degree program to others’ ideas on the web), and I’d have gone crazy over something like this when I was kid. I’d go crazy for a reading corner, even today, to be completely honest, haha. Anyway, re: the vinyl..that stuff really can be a pain. I work with it A LOT when I’m etching glass since that is what I primarily make my stencils out of, but I think I literally get it stuck to everything (and I have a terrible time centering it, too, no matter how big of a piece I’m working on) before I actually get it placed on the glass. You and your husband did a great job on this! :)
