Pottery is just not my thing.

I have never painted pottery. Well, that is, until last Saturday. Em and I did the whole mother daughter thing and had a great time! Only, she was over it as soon as her ’small’ ice cream dish was covered in paint. My ‘Cookies for Santa’ plate took a little longer.

Like I said, I’ve never painted pottery. So, I let the girl explain every single detail to me and what I should expect. I did act totally clueless even though I did have a few expectations. But I was curious what the end result would be. The look on her face when clueless me unrolled my brushes . . . .

PRICELESS.

That really was not my intentions. I tried pulling my brushes out inconspicuously, but it was still obvious. Now, I was going to be super embarrassed if my finished plate look like crap especially since I brought my own brushes – and until 5 pm tonight, I was scared to death and certain of the janky look it had when they pulled it out of the kiln earlier in the day. I was so embarrassed that I actually sent my husband to pick it up for me {and email me a picture so I wasn’t too upset and drop it when I looked at it for the first time.}

I AM DEAD. SERIOUS.

And for the record, pottery is hard to paint. I had sensory overload touching that rough plate. I gritted my teeth the entire time and found it incredibly hard to focus. Or that could have been all the people around me that were talking while painting as loud as they can. I’m not use to all the noises.

SO DISTRACTING.

Okay – you have waited long enough. The finished product . . .

I did not paint the words – they did. I literally ran out of time. Em and I had a birthday party to attend and she was beyond her limit in the patience department. After seeing something that they were wording after I asked them to word mine, made me incredibly nervous. I’m certain a different person did mine. I definitely need some practice. But I’m happy with the result!!! {and still glad my husband picked it up! haha!} Next time, I’ll bring my own latex gloves. Seriously, the roughness of it was horrible. My skin is crawling thinking about it.

I think I’ll just stick to canvases.

About Kim
I picked up a paint brush for the first time 7 years ago, and haven't put it down since. My goal - To paint a canvas for my son's nursery. I never dreamed a business would be born out of it. {And if you saw the first canvas, you would think the same thing, too!}

    That turned out precious! I’m with you, I cannot stand the feel of unglazed ceramics….like nails on a chalkboard! Do you have a “thing” with Pampered Chef stones, too? I refuse to even touch them during a PC party…haha!

      I was actually going to compare it to one of those stones! Yes, hate is an understatement. All mine are finally black as coal and manageable! haha! And thanks – not too bad. I just wish it was my hand that painted the words. Just so I did it all!!

    Well, pottery may not be your thing, but I love that plate! Anytime I’ve tried to do stripes on pottery they turn out looking wonky and no good!

  3. Kim AMAZING as always. I hate the feeling of pottery too. I feel all chalky and gritty when I am done. Your stripes are fantastic too, maybe if I bring my own brushes (which means I need to purchase some first) maybe that would help me. :p

      the brushes they offer for you to use are horrible! I knew that before hand b/c my kids had went to a bday party at one of those places and I remember thinking people are getting ripped off using those! There is no way you can paint decent with 1.) cheap brush 2.) worn out brush and 3.) round brush . . . or atleast that was the type of brushes that we had at our table!

    Is it sad I feel like we are friends? I love your plate :)

  5. The plate came out perfect! Santa will love it. ;-)

      Thank you! And yes he does! His exact words upon picking it up were, “Uhhh, I thought you said this was going to look like crap? Kim, I’m impressed – I love it. And I can’t wait to eat cookies off of it.” But seriously, it could look like crap – it doesn’t take much to impress him. hahah
